Green Lantern, in DC comics lore, is not a single individual, but rather a mantle held by multiple characters throughout the history of the Green Lantern Corps. The Lantern Corps are an intergalactic police force empowered by willpower, wielding rings that manifest energy constructs.
The first Green Lantern, Alan Scott, debuted in All-American Comics #16 (July 1940). However, he is not traditionally associated with the Green Lantern Corps. His power originated from a mystical Starheart.
The Silver Age introduced Hal Jordan as a test pilot. He was chosen by a dying alien to become a Green Lantern. Guided by the Guardians of the Universe, Hal Jordan was the first human inducted into the Green Lantern Corps.
